NSFS Update
The Scheme was piloted during 2000 and 2001 in 550 schools across
England - funded by the Department of Health.

The New Opportunities Fund has invested 42 million for the next two
years for expansion of the Scheme across England

Expansion is taking place on a region by region basis

In 2002, the first whole regions to benefit from the scheme:
- First region was West Midlands 300,000 children receiving free fruit
in 2300 schools
- Second region was London 600,000 children receiving free fruit in
4000 schools
- In 2003, North West Region (Spring) and East Midlands (Summer) will
receive free fruit
- By Summer 2003 around 1 million children will be receiving free fruit
