NSFS Update
The Scheme was piloted during 2000 and 2001 in 550 schools across
England - funded by the Department of Health.

The New Opportunities Fund has invested £42 million for the next two
years for expansion of the Scheme across England

Expansion is taking place on a region by region basis

In 2002, the first whole regions to benefit from the scheme:
- First region was West Midlands – 300,000 children receiving free fruit
in 2300 schools
- Second region was London – 600,000 children receiving free fruit in
4000 schools
- In 2003, North West Region (Spring) and East Midlands (Summer) will
receive free fruit
- By Summer 2003 around 1 million children will be receiving free fruit
