NSFS Evaluation
Evaluation is an integral part of the Scheme. In order to to ensure complete exploration of
Scheme, three evaluation needs were identified:
Farm to Gate – getting the fruit to schools
Gate to Hand – distributing fruit in schools
Hand to mouth – encouraging children to eat the fruit
To date, the first two of these aspects have been evaluated. However, the focus now
is turning to the Hand to Mouth aspects of the Scheme

Evaluation results have shown that the Scheme is popular:
80% of eligible children took fruit – absence rather than refusal being reason
for non take-up
99% of school staff felt it was a way of improving children’s health
97% of schools stated it was a support to teaching and learning about
healthy eating
An evaluation summary has been produced which can be accessed on the web
at www.doh.gov.uk/fiveaday

During the pilots, fruit was the only produce available to children.
We are now looking to expand the range of produce, including vegetables,
following favourable evaluation results of piloting carrots and tomatoes in
Sheffield and Merseyside.
