5 A Day Across the USA(tm) Ready to Reach More Consumers in 2001 and 2002

Anaheim, Calif. - If the Produce for Better Health Foundation's 5 A Day Across the USA(tm) hasn't been to a city near you, that may soon change. Poised for a third year of grass roots events, the Foundation is planning a series of regional visits to cities across the country in 2001 and 2002. The 5 A Day Across the USA(tm) tours encourage consumers to eat 5 or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables for better health.

To encourage participation from produce industry members, retailers, corporations, schools, 5 A Day State Coordinators and others, the Foundation is releasing its schedule of regions to be visited over the next two years. In 2001, The Foundation will visit Florida in March (including Orlando and Miami); California in May (including: Bakersfield, Fresno, Los Angeles, Sacramento, Salinas, San Diego and San Francisco); and the Northeast in September (including: Baltimore, Md., Boston, Mass., New York, N.Y., Philadelphia, Pa., Portland, Maine, Virginia Beach, Va. and Washington, DC). The destinations for 2002 are Texas in January (including: Dallas/Ft. Worth, Houston and San Antonio); and Arizona in March (including Phoenix and Tucson). Additional cities for these tours will be announced at a later date.

"We've had tremendous success with our 5 A Day Across the USA(tm) tours," said Elizabeth Pivonka, president of the Foundation. "Industry members and 5 A Day State Coordinators have asked us when we'll be visiting their city. These visits show what 5 A Day is all about-reaching people with an important health message. By scheduling our tours through 2002, we hope tour participants and sponsors can mark their calendars in anticipation of our visits."
The Foundation is seeking local and national sponsors for these tours. National sponsors will be recognized throughout each tour for $10,000. Local sponsors will be recognized in their region for $3,500. Foundation Board members receive reduced sponsorship rates of $7,500 for national and $2,500 for local levels. Those interested in becoming national or local sponsors can contact Claudia Wenzing at the Foundation at 302-235-2329; ext. 20. To participate in a tour stop, contact Amy Bielicki at the Foundation at 302-235-2329; ext. 19.

"We're looking forward to successful 5 A Day Across the USA(tm) trips in 2001 and 2002," said Amy Bielicki, director of marketing for the Foundation. "Thanks to the support of retailers, suppliers, commissions and commodity boards, we're able to bring the 5 A Day message to major cities during regional tours and reach millions."

The 5 A Day Across the USA(tm) concept features a series of visits to supermarkets, schools, corporate headquarters, state capitols, city halls and other venues. The Foundation's Produce Man costumed character serves as a living example of the variety of fruits and vegetables. Foundation staff and volunteers conduct activities designed to make eating 5 A Day fun.

Through previous three tours, the Foundation worked with 500 volunteers to visit 50 different cities in 28 states. The Foundation conducted East Coast and West Coast tours in 1999, followed by a cross-country tour earlier this year. Typical events range in size from classroom visits for a few dozen children to activities in downtown plazas reaching thousands. The Foundation team, "Produce Man" and volunteers distribute 5 A Day brochures and other items to help explain the message. Local media help to spread the message by covering the events in their communities.

As more cities, sponsors and events are finalized, the Foundation will release more details. Rest assured, 5 A Day Across the USA(tm) will be on consumers' radar screens for years to come.
